Generally, the main reason is the baby being unable to latch on properly during breastfeeding. However, the babies are also likely to face the side effects because of this such as blisters on their lips caused by breastfeeding. Pain, tenderness, itchiness, swelling are some of the most common symptoms.

Moreover, mouth ulcers can also make your child irritable and make it hard for your child to eat or drink anything. Your child may also not be able to express the pain he/she might be feeling. Warm compress

Though there aren’t any antibacterial benefits, but to soothe sore or cracked area, you may find using warm compresses to be actually beneficial. Dip a washcloth in warm water and place it on the area for a few minutes after wringing out the excess liquid.

Salt water rinse

This solution will help to hydrate the skin and will also help in the healing process. You have to mix half a teaspoon of salt ion 8 ounces of water and apply it using a cloth on the lips after breastfeeding. Make sure you prepare a fresh solution every day so as to reduce the chances of bacterial contamination.

The anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiseptic properties of turmeric is an effective remedy to treat mouth ulcers. You can make a paste of honey and turmeric and apply it on the affected area. This will not only speed up the healing process but will also help to reduce the pain.


Tea tree oil

Add a few drops of tea tree oil to lukewarm water and gently apply this on your baby’s lips using a cotton cloth. Leave it thereon till the time it dries out and then rinse it with clean water. This will help to treat sore lips.

Vitamin C

Eating green vegetables can help to speed up the healing process. It is recommended that you make your child eat more and more green vegetables, for instance, parsley, broccoli, kale bell pepper and fruits such as melons, guava, oranges, papaya etc.

Aloe Vera

The natural healing powers and pain –  relieving properties of aloe Vera are one of the most effective remedies to treat lip blisters. Extract the gel by cutting an aloe Vera leaf and apply this on the affected areas. Allow it to dry and then clean the area with lukewarm water.

Ice cubes

As a temporary relief, ice cubes can be used to numb the area and also reduce swelling. For this, wrap the ice cubes in a thin towel and place it on the affected area for a few minutes.


The lactic acid in curd can help to kill the bacteria causing mouth ulcers. You can ask your child to have plain curd. You can also make it into tasty smoothies to make it more interesting for your child.

Tulsi leaves

Tulsi leaves are widely used in the treatment of all kinds of skin problems be it cracks, pain or even bleeding. Take a few leaves and make a paste of all of them. Apply the paste on the nipples and leave it thereon till the time it dries out. You can also ask your child to chew a few leaves in other cases.


Curry leaves

Curry leaves are a rich source of Vitamin and have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. In case, the mouth ulcer was caused because of vitamin deficiency, curry leaves can fight that and act as a home remedy. You can make a paste of curry leaves and butter milk and ask your child to either drink it or use it as a mouthwash.


Coconut oil, olive oil or sweet almond oil can be used to massage the area. This will keep the area moist and will thus reduce dryness. Take a small amount of oil and heat it and then apply the warm oil on the nipples and massage the area. Make sure you wash your nipples before breastfeeding.

Although all of the listed remedies will prove to be of major help but in case, your child experiences any sort of discomfort or pain that lasts for more than a week, then you should seek an immediate help.
